Passage: Mark 7:1-23
Too many of us are like Pharisees and scribes. We think we have an outward cleanliness problem; if we just stop encountering this defiled “thing,” then we will be clean. Or if we follow enough rules and obey enough self-imposed laws, then we will be clean. But we don’t realize that outward cleansing, stopping, or starting behaviors, will never be enough. Because, as Jesus shows us, our defilement flows from the inside out.
How is a person clean before God?
- Religion can’t cleanse you.
- Our uncleanliness isn’t skin-deep
- We are defiled from the inside out
Religion can’t save us. Religion can’t cleanse us because we have a relational problem. Our hearts are broken, stained, and defiled. What we need is more than quick fixes, laws, and behavior modification. What we need is new hearts.
